Royals Injury Update: Salvador Perez sits with groin strain

By on 7/20/2014 03:00:00 PM

Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez was out of Sunday's lineup because of a right groin strain, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star:

Fortunately for the Royals, it doesn't sound as though this will be a long term issue, with Perez telling McCullough that he expected to be back in the lineup for Monday's game.  Brett Hayes replaced Perez behind the plate for Sunday's contest against the Red Sox.

The Royals cannot afford an injury to Perez as they try to stay in the divisional and wild card hunt. The 24-year-old ranks second amongst all catchers in WAR with 3.1, providing above-average offense (.759 OPS, good for a 107 OPS+) with excellent defense. Perez became an All-Star for the second consecutive season this July.
