Seahawks Injury Update: Bruce Irvin still recovering from hip surgery

By on 7/14/2014 11:42:00 AM

The Seattle Seahawks surprisingly used the 15th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft on Bruce Irvin, and he rewarded them with eight sacks as a rookie. Last season was derailed early by a four-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drugs policy, and Irvin finished with just two sacks in 12 games as he was moved to linebacker primarily.

Irvin had hip surgery in early June, which has his status for training camp up in the air and he is still rehabbing. His status for the start of the season also has to be considered questionable, and Seahawks' head coach Pete Carroll confirmed that thought soon after Irvin's hip surgery.

The Seahawks have solid linebacker depth, so they won't need to rush Irvin back into action unless other injuries hit the position between now and the start of the season. Irvin is likely to have a fairly specialized role as a pass rusher anyway, so he could be put on a limited snap count to start the season if he is not quite back to full strength. Having Irvin on the field in some capacity from the start this year would surely help the Seahawks maintain their status as one of the league's best defenses.
