Tigers Injury Update: Joel Hanrahan, Andy Dirks

By on 7/23/2014 10:15:00 AM

The Detroit Tigers bullpen woes have continued this season as they lost 5-4 Tuesday night with the bullpen blowing the game. Reliever Joel Hanrahan has been recovering from the dreaded Tommy John surgery and Tigers fans could not wait for him to help the bullpen. However, Joel Hanrahan has been shut down after his bullpen session. There is good news with Tigers outfielder Andy Dirks. Dirks has resumed baseball activities as reported by James Schmehl from

Joel Hanrahan
The Tigers reliever has suffered another setback. They have shut him down after his bullpen session in Lakeland, Florida. Hanrahan, who signed a one-year contract worth three million in May, will be re-examined later this week. The Tigers do not want to press him to return early because they do not want to risk further injury. He has been sidelined since last May after tearing his flexor tendon that required Tommy John surgery. When Hanrahan was signed his agent, Larry Reynolds, suggested a potential mid-June return. With this new setback, it is hard to tell if the closer will be able to return before the end of the season.

Andy Dirks
Tigers outfielder has resumed baseball activities on Monday for the first time since being recalled from his rehab assignment last week when he had inflammation in his lower back from an increase in activity. He threw from 120 feet and swung off a tee in Lakeland, Florida. Dirks underwent back surgery on March 10 and has been out of the lineup the whole season. He was suffered several setbacks on his way to recovery.
