Twins Injury Update: Joe Mauer placed on DL with oblique strain

By on 7/02/2014 11:01:00 AM

UPDATE 11:00 ET: The Twins have officially placed Mauer on the disabled list with a right oblique strain, as tweeted by MLB Roster Moves. LaVelle Neal of the Star Tribune indicated that Chris Colabello had rejoined the team and so seems the likely replacement on the roster.

Original article:

Minnesota Twins first baseman Joe Mauer made an early exit during Tuesday's win over the Kansas City Royals. A trip to the disabled list could be on the cards as Rhett Bollinger of reports that Mauer suffered a right oblique strain:

According to Bollinger, Mauer hurt the oblique on the swing that brought him a double in the bottom of the fourth, leading to his exit in the fifth. The 31-year-old admitted that the area has bothered him over the past week but described the feeling on that particular swing as "like somebody hit me pretty hard right there".

Oblique issues have a tendency to linger if not given the proper time to heal and, as Mauer now knows all too well, it's very difficult to swing a bat without aggravating that area. Bollinger notes that Chris Parmelee moved in from left field to play first, so he could fill in at the position, and recently-signed DH Kendrys Morales could also make a few starts at first if Mauer has to miss time, with three at the position already in 2014.
