Houston Astros reliever Darin Downs was unavailable Friday night and may not be able to pitch Saturday against the Boston Red Sox as he battles discomfort in his right oblique, reports Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle:
Bo Porter said Downs should only be out for a couple days, but acknowledged that oblique injuries can often take a while to recover from.
The Astros are keeping Downs on the active roster for now and recalled reliever Kevin Chapman from Triple-A Oklahoma City for extra bullpen depth. Outfielder L.J. Hoes was sent down to make room.
Downs has appeared in 40 games for Houston this year, posting a 4.31 ERA (3.29 FIP). The Astros have the worst bullpen in the majors, posting an ERA of 5.00 in 2014.
