Astros Injury Update: Jose Altuve exits with neck discomfort

By on 8/09/2014 09:45:00 AM

Houston Astros star second baseman Jose Altuve came out of Friday's win after five innings, with what the team later tweeted was neck discomfort:

According to Chris Abshire of, the diminutive infielder looked to be in pain after flying out in the fifth and was replaced by Gregorio Petit. Altuve told Abshire that he felt something in his neck before the game, but it wasn't until that at-bat that the pain flared up. The All-Star did not seem to think it would affect his status for Saturday's game, while manager Bo Porter was a little more cautious, saying that the team would 'see how he feels'.

The Astros will certainly hope Altuve doesn't need to miss any time, as they are considerably worse without him. Altuve leads the team with 3.7 WAR (per Baseball-Reference); no other position player on the team has more than Jason Castro's 2.1 wins. The 24-year-old leads the league in hits with 158, is second in stolen bases (45) and strikes out just once every 11.3 at-bats, also second-best in the majors.
