Athletics Injury Update: Jed Lowrie expects to hit DL

By on 8/14/2014 02:00:00 PM

Oakland Athletics shortstop Jed Lowrie appears to be headed to the disabled list with a fractured finger. As I reported last week, Lowrie bruised his finger on a ground ball in the fourth inning of the A’s game last Monday, August 4th.  As reported by Sports Injury Alert yesterday, Lowrie had hoped to play through the injury but a move seems likely after today’s game to put Lowrie on the DL.

A’s manager Bob Melvin confirmed a move is likely after today’s game, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.  Lowrie played yesterday but was unable to get a good grip when trying to throw the ball in the infield.  He wants to continue playing but knows it is hurting the team; he knows that the hairline fracture will not heal itself if he continues to play.  Hairline fractures heal more quickly than complete fractures, so the team hopes that Lowrie will be able to play the final month of the regular season.

The Oakland Athletics (73-47) are playing an afternoon game today, so the announcement of the roster move may come as early as this evening. Lowrie is batting .238 with five home runs and 42 RBIs in 110 games this season.  He hopes to be back with the AL West first place team in time to help them in the pennant race.
