Athletics Injury Update: Nick Punto on DL with hamstring strain

By on 8/03/2014 11:30:00 AM

Oakland Athletics infielder Nick Punto left Saturday's game early after rounding third base in attempt to score a second run on Jed Lowrie's RBI single. Our own Jacob Fagan described the injury soon after it occurred. Now,'s Jane Lee reports that the Athletics have placed Punto on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring.

Punto rounded third, but a few steps after hitting the bag, he strained the hamstring. The :52-second mark of the video clip shows him grabbing the back of his leg as he went down. He made it back to the bag but came out immediately. Eric Sogard pinch ran and remained in the game at second base.

In her post-game report, Lee said that Punto will go onto the disabled list Sunday, his first stint of the season. Andy Parrino and Nate Freiman may share time at second base in Punto's absence. Freiman is coming up from Triple-A Sacramento to take Punto's roster spot.

Punto is hitting .207 with 2 HR and 13 RBI in 64 games. His value comes as a defender who can play many positions, especially in the middle infield.
