Athletics Injury Update: Sean Doolittle placed on DL

By on 8/24/2014 07:55:00 PM

Despite earlier reports that Sean Doolittle was "not worried" after a cramp in his side during Saturday night's win over the Los Angeles Angels, the Oakland Athletics placed the closer on the 15-day DL with a right intercostal strain and recalled right-handed reliever Dan Otero from Triple-A Sacramento, the team announced just before Sunday's finale. The A's and Angels are tied for the lead in the AL West going into the game.
A rarity among closers because he's a lefty, the 27-year-old All-Star Doolittle has saved 20 games for the A's, including the first two games of the A's-Angels series. He has also recorded five holds, three blown saves, one win and three losses, while posting a 2.28 ERA in 54 appeances. He has struck out 80, walked five (!) and allowed four homers in 55.1 innings.

Otero, 29, was 7-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 56 appearances (71 innings). In spite of his excellent record, he had been optioned to Sacramento on August 22 to make room for Craig Gentry.

Doolittle is in his third major league season, with an 8-9 career record, 2.83 ERA. He was the A's first round draft pick in 2007, and made his debut June 5, 2012. He was slow getting to the majors due to two left knee sugeries in 2009 and 2010. The A's signed Doolittle to a five-year /$10.5 million contract that takes him through 2018 with team options for 2019 and 2020.
