Bengals Injury Update: BenJarvus Green-Ellis day-to-day with hip injury

By on 8/23/2014 12:15:00 PM

BenJarvus Green-Ellis has been a productive runner for the Cincinnati Bengals over the last two seasons, with 1,850 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. Giovani Bernard was already likely to push him into a background role this year, and Cincinnati's use of a second-round pick (55th overall) on Jeremy Hill seemed to be a sign Green-Ellis would have to perform well during training camp and the preseason to keep his roster spot.

Green-Ellis has just five carries for 22 yards through two preseason games, and a lingering hip injury that kept him out of practice on Friday has his status for Sunday night's third preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals in serious doubt.

Bernard remains clearly atop the depth chart for Cincinnati, barring significant injury Sunday night of course, and Hill may get some work with the starters against the Cardinals. Green-Ellis would then be likely to work with the backups, but if he is unable to play his chance to make a strong case to keep his roster spot would be eliminated. Rex Burkhead and Cedric Peerman are also in the running mix for the Bengals, but Burkhead's recent knee injury would seem to work in Green-Ellis' favor and Peerman is unlikely to be counted on as a significant contributor.

There's still a chance Green-Ellis is one of the notable veterans around the league released between now and Week 1. But for now, he looks fairly certain to remain in a Bengals' uniform entering the season.
