Bengals Injury Update: Jason Campbell injury prompts Tyler Wilson signing

By on 8/10/2014 04:15:00 PM

Andy Dalton is clearly the starting quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, but the depth chart behind him is getting thin with Jason Campbell suffering an arm injury in Thursday night's preseason opener. Rookie A.J. McCarron is battling a shoulder issue that has kept him out of practice, so the Bengals signed Tyler Wilson on Saturday to add some depth under center.

Wilson was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the fourth round (112th overall) in the 2013 draft, but he wound up on their practice squad and landed with the Tennessee Titans after being waived last November. The Titans waived Wilson on Wednesday, and he has yet to throw a pass in an NFL regular season game.

The severity of Campbell's injury is unclear at this point, but as long as he avoided a serious injury he will be Dalton's unquestioned backup entering the regular season. McCarron's status going forward seems to be up in the air right now, with a lingering possibility he'll spend his rookie season on injured reserve. Wilson looks likely to be a camp arm, based on Cincinnati's need for a healthy quarterback to get through most of the preseason, but if he happens to perform well he could make the Bengals' 53-man roster.
