Bills Injury Update: Sammy Watkins out with rib injury

By on 8/17/2014 12:24:00 PM

The Buffalo Bills had a massive scare last night when rookie standout wide receiver Sammy Watkins suffered a rib injury during their preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tim Graham of the Buffalo News first tweeted the news, and Buffalo fans around the country held their breath.

Watkins took a hit from Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier on a third-down pass from quarterback EJ Manuel, which fell incomplete but was negated by a separate Steelers penalty. The rookie receiver immediately grabbed for his side, under his left arm. Watkins went to the sideline and was seen grimacing in pretty serious pain. Trainers and team doctors examined him on the sideline before he walked to the locker room under his own power.

Watkins then had X-rays of the ribs taken, the results of which were unknown immediately after the game, coach Doug Marrone said:
They're going to run tests and everything and we'll see how he is.
Almost immediately after the X-rays, the Buffalo Bills posted on Twitter that Watkins would not return:
The former Clemson University star Watkins was the fourth overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft last May, a desperate need for the Bills after losing Stevie Johnson to San Francisco. In three seasons at Clemson, Watkins caught 240 passes for 3,391 yards and 27 touchdowns. On those catches, 48 were for 20 yards or more.

Watkins was widely heralded as one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the draft, which prompted Buffalo to trade up to select him. Bills quarterback EJ Manuel says he thinks Watkins will be just fine:
I think Sammy will be fine. ... hopefully he'll come back and bounce back from whatever little injury he had.
An injury of any significance would be a major blow to the Bills. The team is expecting big things from the talented wide receiver this season, and he was already slated as a starter on the depth chart. The entire Bills organization and fanbase are surely waiting and holding their breath for the impending diagnosis.
