During a his first minor league rehab outing, the 30 year old Neil Wagner left with elbow pain after just three pitches. Shi Davdi of Sportsnet is reporting that Wagner is on his way to see elbow specialist Dr. James Andrews.
Dr. Andrews has become closely associated with Tommy John surgery. While many times the procedure has been successful, a full year rehab could be devastating for a player who has spent parts of nine seasons in the minor leagues.
Wagner has pitched in 46 games in Toronto over the past two seasons, but he no longer looks to be an option for bullpen help as a September call-up. With the divisional and wild card races as close as they have been, adding any arm with major league experience would have provided a boost to the bullpen.
For his career, Wagner has gone 2-4 with a 4.92 ERA. Last year was his best season as a professional, pitching 36 games and posting a 3.79 ERA.
