Braves Injury Alert: Jonny Venters to undergo third TJ surgery

By on 8/29/2014 05:30:00 PM

The Atlanta Braves and Jonny Venters are hoping that the third time is a charm in his career.  Venters will attempt yet another comeback as he will undergo the third Tommy John surgery of his career on Thursday.
When Venters is healthy he is one of the best relief pitchers in the entire league.  In 2010, he finished in the top ten for Rookie of the Year voting.  The next season, the lefty made his first and only all-star team as he led the league with 85 appearances and only allowed 18 earned runs in 88 innings.

He last pitched in 2012.  During that season, he appeared in 66 games and posted a 3.22 ERA.

By getting the surgery again, the 29-year-old left hander is showing remarkable drive and determination.  It generally takes over a season to recover, so he is targeting a 2016 return to the Braves bullpen.  The lefty will certainly be missed yet again.
