Brewers Injury Update: Jean Segura leaves with hand contusion

By on 8/16/2014 10:00:00 AM

Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Jean Segura exited last night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers after bruising his hand while breaking up a double play.  The injury came as he deflected a transfer throw with his hand.
Tom Haudricourt is also reporting that Segura's bruise did not look good, and there is a good chance that he will not be in the lineup tonight as they square off against Clayton Kershaw.

Segura has battled through a difficult sophomore season both on and off the field.  After an all-star rookie season in which he batted .294 with 12 home runs and 44 steals, he has slumped this year.  In 112 games this season, he is batting just .234 with four home runs and a .318 slugging percentage.

In his absence, Elian Herrera will see time time at short.  While Herrera has been able to get on base this season, (.292 batting average) the Brewers will miss the defense of Segura while he is out. His tremendous range and laser-like throwing arm has helped him to become one of the best defensive shortstops in the game.
