Broncos Injury Update: Montee Ball sidelined with appendectomy

By on 8/05/2014 10:00:00 AM

Montee Ball moved up a spot on the depth chart for the Denver Broncos after Knowshon Moreno hit the free agent market and was not retained, and the second-year running back has been a popular breakout candidate throughout the offseason. So Monday's news that Ball underwent an emergency appendectomy that will sideline him for the rest of training camp and the preseason was out of the blue, but he is expected to be ready to go for Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Ball rushed for 297 yards over the final five regular season games last year, with at least 72 yards in all three games he had double-digit carries. After a productive college career at Wisconsin, he should be well-suited to a lead role in Denver's running back mix.

As long as he is ready for the start of the season Ball's absence could actually be a good thing for the Broncos, as the spotlight will now fall on the battle to be his backup between Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson. They both practiced with the first-team offense on Monday, with Hillman taking a bigger chunk of the reps, and I would expect each back to see significant action during preseason games.
