Browns Injury Update: Buster Skrine may need surgery

By on 8/19/2014 01:30:00 PM

Cleveland Browns cornerback Buster Skrine could need surgery on his thumb, however the team is optimistic that he’ll be available by the start of the regular season.

On Friday, Skrine left the practice and remained sidelined during Saturday’s drills.

“I’m not sure how long he’ll be, but we think he should be available for the opener,” Head Coach Mike Pettine said.

Skrine, in his fourth season out of Tennessee, started 15 games in 2013 and played very well opposite fellow corner Joe Haden. This offseason, he has been tasked with holding off first-round pick, Justin Gilbert, who got the start in place of Skrine on Monday.

Even if Gilbert wins the starting job, Skrine will still have a huge role as the team’s nickelback. In a league full of passing, you can never have enough quality corners, and the Browns will likely hold out hope that Skrine’s recovery is swift.
