Cardinals Injury Update: Jason Motte placed on DL

By on 8/08/2014 04:15:00 PM

St. Louis Cardinals reliever Jason Motte has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back sprain, reports Jenifer Langosch of

The move is retroactive to August 1, when Motte last pitched. Motte has been used sparingly since being activated in May after missing all of 2013 while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Motte has pitched just 22 innings this season, posting a 4.91 ERA (6.91 FIP) while allowing seven home runs. He led the National League with 42 saves in 2012, Motte’s last season at full health.

Reliever Nick Greenwood has been recalled from Triple-A Memphis for the second time to take Motte’s place.  Greenwood allowed 10 runs in 19 innings during a month-long stint with the Cardinals earlier in the season.

St. Louis’ bullpen has been middle of the pack with a 3.53 ERA, although Motte’s absence doesn’t figure to make a big impact either way.
