Cardinals Injury Update: Jon Jay hopes to start Tuesday

By on 8/04/2014 06:30:00 AM

The St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday by the score of 3-2. The win improved the Cardinals to 59-51 and pulled them to within a game of the Brewers in National League Central. The Cardinals were again without outfielder Jon Jay. The good news is that Jay could be back into the lineup for an important series against the Boston Red Sox starting Tuesday.

I reported on August 2 that Jay, who is dealing with a sore wrist, was listed as day-to-day. The Cardinals have depth in the outfield with  Matt Holliday, Allen Craig, rookie Oscar Taveras and Peter Bourjos  and can make sure Jay's wrist is healed before reinserting him in the lineup.

As reported by Alex Halsted and Jenifer Langosch of, Jay sat out for the fifth straight day on Sunday. Manager Mike Matheny said Jay was available off the bench and it hopeful that Jay an return for the series opener against the Red Sox on Tuesday.
"It's been something that has been bothering him here for a while. It's one of those things that needs a little time, and he continues to get treatment, and it seems to be getting better."
Jay, in his fifth Major League season, is batting .289 with a home run and 24 RBI in 92 games this season.  In 630 career games, Jay has a batting average of .292 with 26 home runs, 195 RBI and 43 stolen bases.
