Cardinals Injury Update: Tyrann Mathieu closer to return

By on 8/07/2014 08:00:00 PM

Injured Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu may be getting closer to returning to action.
Mathieu is still rehabilitating his knee after having surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL, but Darren Urban at azcardinals.com reports that the "Honey Badger" hopes to be back at practice in the next 2-3 weeks.

Despite his optimism, the Cardinals and head coach Bruce Ariens don't expect Mathieu to return to action until week five of the regular season. In fact, Mathieu himself said "I don’t want to go out there if I’m not the guy I was last year.”

The Cardinals aren't feeling the need to rush him back either. The team is very deep at safety and are covered on the outside by cornerbacks Patrick Peterson and Antonio Cromartie.

Mathieu recorded 68 tackles, a sack, and had two interceptions in 13 games last season before getting hurt. He also chipped in as a kick returner.

Arizona will host the Houston Texans in the preseason opener for both teams on Saturday night.
