Cardinals Injury Update: Yadier Molina set to return Friday

By on 8/29/2014 08:45:00 AM

While it is not yet official, Derrick Goold's tweet is some of the best news that Cardinals fans have heard in a long time.  Catcher and leader of the franchise Yadier Molina is on his way back to St. Louis and expected to be activated for tonight's game against the Chicago Cubs.
Molina has been out since July 9th with a thorn ligament in his right thumb.  In his absence the Cardinals started Tony Cruz and A.J. Pierzynski, but neither could come close to replacing Molina either at the plate or behind it.

In his two minor league starts, Molina had five hits in six at-bats, including three doubles.  Once just viewed as a mediocre hitter, Molina has improved almost every year at the plate to become elite.  This season in 87 games he has a .287 average with seven homers and 30 RBIs.

As the best game caller in the league he will be a welcome presence behind the plate as well.  The Cardinals have been know to put things together for the stretch drive of the season.  They are just 1.5 games back in the National League Central, and getting Molina back could help to put them over the edge.
