Cubs Injury Update: Anthony Rizzo out with back issue

By on 8/31/2014 10:45:00 AM

The Chicago Cubs split a doubleheader on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals, winning the first game by the score of 5-1 and losing the second by the score of 13-2. The Cubs sit at 61-75 on the season, last in the National League Central. The Cubs were without first baseman Anthony Rizzo due to a back issue. Chris Valaika started both games in place of Rizzo, going 1-for-3 with a home run in the first game and 1-for-4 in the second game.

As reported by Carrie Muskat of, Rizzo is not expected to play the entire weekend because of lingering tightness in his lower back. He has not played since his back tightened up on Thursday against the Cincinnati Reds.
"I'm going to shut it down for today (Saturday) and tomorrow, too. I hit, I ran. Hitting felt all right. I took two rounds, let it calm down, hit again. Then I ran for the ultimate [test]. Jogging [is a problem]. It felt a lot better today than yesterday, so I think if we let it rest, it'll be OK," he said. "I don't want to come back and then miss the rest of the season if I'm really bad. I can wait a couple days to play the rest of the season."
Rizzo hopes to be ready to return on Monday against the Brewers, but concedes he's day-to-day and will reassess his situation on Monday.

Rizzo is batting .278 with a career-high 30 home runs and 71 RBI this season. In 425 career games with the Padres and Cubs, Rizzo has 69 home runs, 208 RBI and a .250 batting average.
