Cubs Injury Update: Anthony Rizzo expected to return Monday

By on 8/30/2014 04:30:00 PM

Chicago Cubs slugging first baseman Anthony Rizzo sat out again Saturday against the Cubs' most-heated rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals, making four straight games that he has missed. Rizzo has tightness in his lower back, and the Cubs expect him to miss the entire weekend series. He could return on Labor Day, September 1, when the Cubs host the Milwaukee Brewers in a Wrigley Field afternoon game.

In her August 30 blog post,'s Cubs beat writer Carrie Muskat notes that Rizzo tried to warm up with batting practice and running drills but felt his back "lock up" during the activities. Muskat quoted the first baseman discussing his status. Said Rizzo,
“I’m going to shut it down for today and tomorrow, too. I hit, I ran. Hitting felt all right. I took two rounds, let it calm down, hit again. Then I ran for the ultimate [test]. Jogging [is a problem].... It felt a lot better today than yesterday, so I think if we let it rest, it’ll be OK. I don’t want to come back and then miss the rest of the season if I’m really bad. I can wait a couple days to play the rest of the season.”
Rizzo came out of Tuesday night's game in Cincinnati in the late innings when his back tightened up. He has dealt with tightness before, but he has not missed extensive time because of it.

Rizzo is hitting .278 with 30 HR and 71 RBI in his second full season with the Cubs. He struggled to hit .223 last year, but this year's turn-around is just one of the many good signs that the Cubs have shown as they prepare for the near future.
