Cubs Injury Update: Brian Schlitter to DL

By on 8/10/2014 02:00:00 PM

The Chicago Cubs have placed right-handed reliever Brian Schlitter on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation says's Carrie Muskat. To fill in his roster spot, the Cubs have activated Jacob Turner after acquiring him in a waiver trade with the Miami Marlins.

Schlitter has had a rough second half, compiling a record of 0-1, 5.68 ERA, and 1.64 WHIP in 16 appearances since July 1. He started to turn things around in August with 2.1 scoreless inning in three appearances. He was very reliable in the first half, which gives him a season record of 2-3 with a 3.47 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 53 appearances. This season is his first full one in the Majors. He pitched eight total innings for the Cubs in 2010.

Meanwhile, Turner joined the Cubs Saturday, but according to Muskat, manager Rick Renteria has not yet decided how to use his new pitcher. Turner was 4-7 with a 5.97 ERA for Miami, but Renteria believes that pitching coach Chris Bosio can bring back the promise that made Turner a Detroit Tigers first-round draft pick in 2009.
"Maybe a change of scenery can help. We know [Turner] was a highly touted prospect, we know that he has a good arm. Getting him here and putting our eyes on him in real terms and allowing the staff to work with him and see how things develop is something we're looking forward to doing."

The Cubs made two other roster moves involving Chris Rusin and Neil Ramirez, and Muskat has provided the summary of all of Saturday's activity.
