Cubs Injury Update: Justin Ruggiano, Ryan Sweeney, Anthony Rizzo

By on 8/29/2014 04:00:00 AM

As the Chicago Cubs continued their series of exciting prospect call-ups this season by giving Jorge Soler his first shot in the big leagues, some more established players are making space on the roster and in the lineup as a result of injury concerns. Both Justin Ruggiano and Ryan Sweeney have landed on the disabled list, while star first baseman Anthony Rizzo took a seat again on Thursday because of a nagging back problem.'s Carrie Muskat reported on Wednesday that both Sweeney and Ruggiano were placed on the DL, Sweeney with a left hamstring strain and Ruggiano with left ankle inflammation. The former left Tuesday's game after one at-bat after suffering the strain running to first base, while Ruggiano had not played since Saturday because of a lack of improvement with his ankle. Yesterday, Muskat tweeted that Ruggiano was going to see a specialist in Dallas to determine the extent of the issue. It's not clear whether either player will return this season.

Rizzo, meanwhile, had hoped to return for Thursday's game after lower back tightness had forced an early exit on Tuesday and kept him out on Wednesday, but was unable to do so. According to Muskat, the first baseman is not particularly concerned about the problem and still thinks he can return for Friday's game against the Cardinals. Rizzo is currently in the midst of his best major league season to date, with 30 home runs and a .889 OPS in 129 games.
