Diamondbacks Injury Update: Chris Owings still has no timetable for return

By on 8/08/2014 10:45:00 AM

The Arizona Diamondbacks dropped to 17 games below .500 at 49-66 following a 6-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. The Diamondbacks, ranked 18th in the Major Leagues in runs scored, managed just seven hits and scored their only runs on RBI by Mark Trumbo and Jake Lamb. On the injury front, Chris Owings is working his way back from a shoulder injury, but there is still no timetable for his return.

Our own Evan Petzold reported on July 20 that Owings, who has been out since June 25 with a shoulder injury, was shut down for three days. At the time, there was no indication if the team just wanted to give him extra rest or if he shoulder was re-aggravated.

As reported by Adam Lichtenstein of, Owings took 30-35 swings off a tee on Thursday. He's progressing slowly and one problem, according to manager Kirk Gibson, is that the injury forced Owings to change his swing.

Although there was significant improvement in Owings' swing, Gibson wasn't ready to give a timetable for his return.
"He was letting it go … very aggressively. I don't think we're at the point where we have any idea [when Owings will return]."
Owings, in his second Major League season, is batting .277 with six home runs and 21 RBI this season. In 20 games last season, Owings had a .291 average with five doubles, five RBI and two stolen bases, in 55 at bats.
