By on 8/03/2014 09:00:00 AM

The Arizona Diamondbacks have struggled this season, posting a 48-63 record, placing them fourth in the National League Western Division. On Saturday, their season got worse when they lost Paul Goldschmidt. The gold glove and silver slugger winner was hit by an Ernesto Frieri fastball in the ninth inning of Friday's loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He did not realize the extent of the injury till after the game. This injury ended up placing him on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left hand as tweeted by Will Carroll.

Goldschmidt had this to say about staying in the game with an injured left hand. He told Adam Lichtenstein from
I was holding out hope. I was staying pretty positive, wasn't trying to think about it being broken. But I knew it was a possibility."
Manager Kirk Gibson had this to say,
It hurts, he's one of our best players, for sure. One of the best players in the league."
Gibson also had words about moving Mark Trumbo over to first base,
We'll try to get him ready in case we decide to move him over there. We'll at least have the flexibility."
The Dbacks slugger, 26, has been one of the only reliable parts to the offense and defense this year. He is batting .300/.396/.542 with 19 homers and 69 RBI's this season. There is no specific timetable for return at this point.
