Dodgers Injury Update: Adrian Gonzalez, Yasiel Puig, Paul Maholm

By on 8/03/2014 02:28:00 PM

The Los Angeles Dodgers will have both first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and outfielder Yasiel Puig back in the lineup Sunday against the Chicago Cubs. Both players missed Saturday's game with minor injuries but have recovered. The Dodgers announced their lineup a few hours before game time, 4:00 p.m. EDT.

Both Gonzalez and Puig exited Friday night's game along with pitcher Paul Maholm. Gonzalez had a bruised knee, and Puig had a mild hamstring strain. A day of rest was all they needed until they each pinch hit in Saturday night's 12-inning win over the Cubs.

Maholm, though, suffered a much more severe injury -- season-ending, in fact.'s Ken Gurnick reports that Maholm will undergo season-ending reconstructive surgery to repair the torn ACL in his right knee suffered while covering first base on a ground ball in the bottom of the seventh Friday night.

Manager Don Mattingly called the injury "unfortunate" and discussed the loss of his pitcher. Said Mattingly,
"Unfortunate for us. Unfortunate for him ... It's just unfortunate to lose a guy like that at this time in the season.... It definitely takes away from our depth a little bit with starting pitching. It leaves us with some gaps."
The surgery is not yet scheduled but will occur before too long.

The Dodgers enter play on August 3 leading San Francisco by 3.5 games in the N.L. West in what became a two-team race early in the season.
