Dolphins Injury Update: Knowshon Moreno returns to practice

By on 8/07/2014 09:45:00 AM

Knowshon Moreno had the best season of his career with the Denver Broncos in 2013, rushing for 1,038 yards and 10 touchdowns while adding 60 catches for 548 yards and three touchdowns. He signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins this offseason, but his tenure in South Beach got off to a slow start with reports he showed up to offseason work out of shape.

Moreno underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in June, and not surprisingly he opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list after an initial recovery timetable of 4-5 weeks was given. Just over six weeks removed from surgery, Moreno was activated from the PUP list on Tuesday and returned to practice on Wednesday.

Moreno did not face contact in his return to practice, so the Dolphins are clearly being cautious and it's virtually certain he won't play in Friday's preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Exactly when he'll play in the preseason, if at all, is still a question.

Lamar Miller has worked with Miami's first-team offense in Moreno's absence, and he will be the starter until further notice. Moreno should remain No. 2 on the depth chart, as long as he gets back to full strength soon, with very little challenge likely to come from anyone else. Daniel ThomasMike Gillislee and Damien Williams are also in Miami's running back mix, but Thomas is dealing with a hamstring issue right now and Gillislee and Williams don't seem likely to make a big impact.
