Giants Injury Update: Buster Posey, Brandon Belt, Hector Sanchez

By on 8/21/2014 03:15:00 PM

The San Francisco Giants need a full-strength roster to stay in the playoff hunt. Unfortunately, with Buster Posey hurting and slumping, and both Brandon Belt and Hector Sanchez potentially done for the year because of concussions, that's exactly what they haven't got.

According to Andrew Baggarly of CSN Bay Area, Posey was out of Wednesday's lineup with soreness in his left hip. Manager Bruce Bochy told Baggarly that he had noticed the problem starting to affect Posey's at-bats and gave him the day off to help manage it. The Giants do not believe that it's a big concern but clearly they don't want Posey to keep putting up a sub-standard performance because he is trying to battle through the pain. The catcher and first baseman will play today.

The concern over both Belt and Sanchez has not subsided. Belt saw a concussion specialist earlier this week and Baggarly reported that while a timetable is uncertain, the first baseman will need at least two-to-three weeks before he can start any activity, and Bochy acknowledged that he would need 'some time' to recover. Sanchez, meanwhile, had a second concussion confirmed after taking yet another foul tip to the mask and Bochy told Baggarly that it was definitely a 'possibility' that the catcher would not play again this season.

Given that both players have been struggling with concussion symptoms for a significant portion of this season, the Giants will undoubtedly be cautious with both, and there may not be enough time left this year to get either player back safely even if the symptoms do eventually subside.
