Indians Injury Update: Michael Bourn, Nick Swisher, Yan Gomes

By on 8/05/2014 04:15:00 PM

Cleveland Indians center fielder Michael Bourn will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Akron on Tuesday, per Jordan Bastian of Bastian adds that catcher Yan Gomes returned to the lineup on Monday night, while designated hitter Nick Swisher was held out of the game with a sore wrist:

Bourn has been out since July 5 with a left hamstring injury. The same hamstring was surgically repaired in October and has landed Bourn on the disabled list twice this season.

In 66 games this season, Bourn has posted a .267/.316/.379 line with just seven stolen bases. Bourn will likely require a lengthy rehab assignment, although he felt good running the bases on Monday.

Swisher appeared to injure his wrist swinging at a Yu Darvish pitch in the sixth inning of Sunday’s game. He hopes to be back on Tuesday, but will take a couple of days off if necessary.

Chris Dickerson started at DH for Swisher in Monday night’s win over the Cincinnati Reds. Swisher has struggled mightily this season, totaling -1.5 WAR.

Gomes was limited to a pinch hitter role for two games with neck stiffness before returning to the starting lineup on Monday. Backup Roberto Perez started both games for Gomes, who has been worth 3.5 WAR already in 2014.
