Indians Injury Update: Yan Gomes to concussion DL

By on 8/23/2014 05:15:00 PM

After taking a foul tip off the mask on Thursday, Cleveland Indians catcher Yan Gomes has been placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list.
Originally, it looked as if he might have avoided missing time, but the move was finally made to put him on the DL.
This season after becoming the full-time catcher, Gomes has lived up to his long-term extension.

Although he is one of the best defensive catchers in the game and has perhaps the American League's best throwing arm, Gomes has come into his own at the plate this season.  Playing in a career high 109 games, Gomes has delivered.  He has a .284 batting average with 17 home runs and has become one of the team's best offensive players.

Though the Indians are a long shot for the playoffs, they need Gomes' bat if they have any hope to contend.  Roberto Perez is expected to see a majority of the time in his absence.  Perez has a .256 batting average through his first 13 major league games.
