Jaguars Injury Update: Cecil Shorts ruled out against Tampa Bay

By on 8/08/2014 03:30:00 PM

Yesterday, the Jaguars announced the team will be without running back Toby Gerhart for the team's preseason opener tonight against Tampa Bay. Now it appears another offensive weapon will be out of action: wide receiver Cecil Shorts.

Shorts injured his hamstring during the first practice of training camp back on July 26. Initially believed to be a two-week recovery period, it would appear Shorts' absence will be a brief one. At least, it should be.

Wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan said regardless of Shorts' ability, he needs to participate in training camp.

"I don't care if you play 10 years, you still need work," Sullivan said. "I don't care who you are or how long you've played. Because you've been there, it helps you, but it's not the same. It's kind of like Gus says, 'You can't learn how to swim by reading a book. You have to get in the water.'"

Injuries are nothing new to Shorts. In addition to the hamstring injury, Shorts suffered a strained calf in the offseason, a groin injury late last year, and a calf injury in the 2013 preseason.
