Lions Injury Update: Calvin Johnson to play Friday

By on 8/18/2014 10:00:00 AM

The Detroit Lions have held wide receiver Calvin Johnson out of their first two preseason games, which could have been expected after he missed two games due to injury in 2013. There seemed to be a chance he would not play at all this preseason, but Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported that Johnson expects to play Friday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Since the third game is thought of as the "dress rehearsal" for the regular season, if Johnson was going to suit up for a preseason game this would be the one. The bigger question would be how much he'll play, since Johnson's status as Matthew Stafford's top target is not in doubt and he's obviously not battling for a roster spot.

The Lions have multiple wide receivers that are trying make a case for a prominent role or a spot on the 53-man roster, most notably Ryan Broyles, Kris Durham, Jeremy Ross, Kevin Ogletree and Corey Fuller. The coaching staff would surely like to get a look at all of them with Stafford under center and a prominent part of the first-team offense on the field, and Friday night's game is the last chance to evaluate them in that setting.
