Mariners Injury Update: Felix Hernandez will start Friday

By on 8/19/2014 03:30:00 PM

According to Bob Dutton of The News Tribune, Felix Hernandez will make his start Friday, as he was shocked that they were asking him such a question.

Hernandez was injured in the fourth inning of Saturday’s 4-2 loss to Detroit when a comebacker hit him in the hip. He exited after five innings as a precaution. He was sore after the game and was limping the day after, but was not limping Monday in Philadelphia.

After leaving his outing after five innings, his streak of consecutive starts pitching at least seven innings and allowing two runs or less finally ended. He has been arguably the best pitcher in the American League in 2014.

This season, Hernandez has a 1.99 ERA in 185.1 innings pitched while striking out 197, walking 32, and carrying a 0.87 WHIP.  He also has a 6.0 WAR. He is a lock for the AL CY Young right now as the Mariners hold a wild card spot.

In 2013, Hernandez had a 3.04 ERA in 204.1 innings pitched while striking out 216, walking 46, and had a 1.13 WHIP. He had a 5.2 WAR. He has over $125 million left on his contract that runs through 2020.

The Mariners play game two in Philadelphia after they try to even up the series as Hisashi Iwakuma (11-6, 2.72 ERA) and A.J. Burnett (6-13, 4.35 ERA) square off.
