Mariners Injury Update: Willie Bloomquist, Michael Saunders

By on 8/08/2014 09:00:00 AM

Seattle Mariners veteran Willie Bloomquist will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Friday morning, as reported by Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune. Bloomquist has already been on the DL for the last couple of weeks but has not been improving as expected. Seattle did get better news from Michael Saunders, who finally started his rehab assignment.

Based on a tweet from Seattle Times beat writer Ryan Divish, it seems as though Bloomquist's season is likely to be over:
Even a best-case five week return would only get Bloomquist back in the middle of September. The 36-year-old was already expected to be out for a while, with surgery or extended rest the two options being considered in the last update from the team.

Saunders began his rehab assignment with a 1-4 night at Triple-A Tacoma, as the Rainers lost 11-4. Saunders was the designated hitter on Thursday night so will look to progress to outfield work as long as he experiences no setbacks. The 27-year-old strained his left oblique a month ago.
