Marlins Injury Update: Henderson Alvarez hits DL with shoulder inflammation

By on 8/02/2014 11:15:00 AM

The Miami Marlins placed Henderson Alvarez on the 15-day DL yesterday after the right-hander complained of shoulder soreness. Juan C. Rodriguez of the Sun-Sentinel reported that Alvarez turned up at Marlins Park on Friday with the discomfort and the team instantly placed him on the DL with what was described as shoulder inflammation.

Manager Mike Redmond told Rodriguez that he hopes they have addressed the problem before it gets too bad:
"He played catch [Thursday] or the day before and I guess it just tightened up on him [Thursday] night while he was sleeping… Hopefully we caught it early enough where it's not a huge deal."
Rodriguez notes that Alvarez did not pitch at all in the first three months of the 2013 season because of shoulder inflammation. The 24-year-old has been excellent in Miami, posting a 2.96 ERA and 1.186 WHIP since coming over from Toronto before the 2013 season in the Jose Reyes trade.

The Marlins fortunately had a replacement immediately available after trading for Houston's Jarred Cosart, allowing Jacob Turner to also stay in the rotation for the next couple of weeks. Turner was heading to the bullpen but will now make Alvarez' start on Sunday. Left-hander Dan Jennings came straight back to the Marlins after being optioned on Thursday.
