Marlins Injury Update: Henderson Alvarez activated for start

By on 8/16/2014 03:00:00 PM

The Miami Marlins have activated pitcher Henderson Alvarez for a start tonight against the Arizona Diamondbacks, reports Juan C. Rodriguez of The Sun-Sentinel:

Alvarez has not pitched since July 30 after inflammation was discovered in his right shoulder. A subsequent MRI revealed no structural damage, so Alvarez only spent just over the minimum amount of time on the disabled list.

Rookie pitcher Anthony DeSclafani was optioned back to Triple-A New Orleans to make room for Alvarez. DeSclafani started five games before appearing twice in the bullpen last week, posting a 6.84 ERA (4.27 FIP) overall.

The 24-year-old Alvarez is having a breakout season with the Marlins and was named to the All-Star team in July. Alvarez has eight wins and a 2.48 ERA (3.38 FIP) in 22 starts this year.

Alvarez’s return will be a critical boost to the surprising Marlins, who are just four games out of the NL Wild Card.
