Mets Injury Update: Daisuke Matsuzaka could throw off a mound soon

The New York Mets got hammered by the Washington Nationals on Tuesday, losing by the score of 7-1. A pitching staff which has been solid, ranked 10th in the Major Leagues in ERA, Allowed seven runs on nine hits in the loss. The offense, which is near the bottom of the league in runs scored continued to struggle. At 54-60, the Mets are in fourth place in the National League East. There is some good news on the injury front, as reliever Daisuke Matsuzaka could throw off a mound soon.

Our own Nathaniel Reeves reported on July 26 that Matsuzaka was placed on the 15-day disabled list. He had some discomfort in his right elbow after pitching two innings in the Mets’ loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on July 24

An update on Matsuzaka, as reported by Anthony DiComo of, is that he has been throwing off flat ground recently and could begin throwing off a mound soon.

Manager Terry Collins would not be surprised if Matsuzaka is on the mound next week. The next step would be a Minor League rehab start. Upon his return, Matsuzaka will likely return to the bullpen.

In 28 games this season, Matsuzaka is 3-3 with a 3.87 ERA. The eight-year Major League veteran has pitched for the Red Sox and Mets and has a career record of 56-43 with a 4.46 ERA.
