Mets Injury Update: Vic Black, Daisuke Matsuzaka. David Wright, Daniel Murphy, Josh Edgin

By on 8/28/2014 06:34:00 PM

Several injury notes as the Mets go for a series win in their set against the Atlanta Braves Thursday night: third baseman David Wright (neck, shoulder) is back in the lineup; second baseman Daniel Murphy (calf) is not, and the Mets are considering a DL stint for him and RH reliever Vic Black (bone spurs in his neck), according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. LH reliever Josh Edgin (bone spurs in his elbow) is likely to be available.
UPDATE 8/28/2014 9:30 p.m.: Vic Black has been placed on the 15-day DL with a herniated disc and  RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka was activated from the DL, per MLBRosterMoves.

Matsuzaka was put on the DL July 25 with elbow inflammation. In his return, Matsuzaka came into the 9th inning with the Mets behind 3-1 and allowed three runs on four hits, including a two-run homer.

Wilmer Flores will play second base replacing Murphy.

  • Wright is playing through his injury after missing two games, a questionable decision, says Jay Jaffe. His season line is .266/.324/.368 (OPS+ 98), but since his shoulder problems worsened after the All-Star Break he has struggled, averaging only .200 (29-of-145) with two doubles, eight RBI and no home runs.
  • Edgin has appeared in 41 games (25.2 innings pitched) with a 1.40 ERA and 25 strikeouts. Lefties have batted only .169 against him.
  • Black has appeared in 39 games (32.2 innings pitched) with a 2.20 ERA and 31 strikeouts.
  • Murphy is hitting .301/.343/.424 OPS+ 119) with nine homers and 53 RBI in 126 games, with a league-leading 159 hits.
  • Before his DL stint, Matsuzaka was 3-3, appearing in 28 games (nine starts, 74.1 innings) with a 3.87 ERA and 71 strikeouts.
