A.J. Pollock, Robbie ErlinAvisail Garcia and many more in today's roundup...

Transactions

Chicago Cubs: placed LHP Felix Doubront on the 15-day DL with a left calf strain. Doubront has only just become a Cubs player after the Red Sox traded him on Thursday, but the first time he takes the mound for Chicago will have to wait. GM Jed Hoyer told Carrie Muskat of MLB.com that there was no set timetable for the left-hander's return.

Detroit Tigers: activated LHP Pat McCoy, who has missed three weeks with a hamstring strain. MLB.com's Jason Beck reports that fellow lefty Ian Krol, who was activated when McCoy hit the DL, was optioned to make way for McCoy, as the Tigers are keen to give him time to work his way back properly after returning from a shoulder injury.

On the mend

Muskat also notes that Cubs reliever Neil Ramirez expects to be ready to return from a triceps strain when he is eligible to do so.

Chicago White Sox reliever Zach Putnam felt 'really good' after testing his right shoulder in a bullpen session Friday, according to MLB.com's Scott Merkin. Putnam will throw another on Sunday and may not need a rehab assignment.

Rehab roundup

Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock got a scare in the first game of his rehab assignment in the Arizona League when he was hit by a pitch on the hand. MLB.com's Adam Lichtenstein tweeted that X-rays were negative and he was expected to play on Saturday night.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times says Ryan Hanigan won't be returning to the Rays until at least next weekend, with the catcher set to rehab at Port Charlotte until Wednesday at minimum.

Angels outfielder Collin Cowgill went 1-3 with a walk in his first game for Triple-A Salt Lake. Cowgill is recovering from fractures to both his nose and thumb.

Avisail Garcia scored the winning run for the Charlotte Knights as the White Sox outfielder played his first rehab game, continuing to progress surprisingly quickly after tearing his labrum in the first week of the season. Meanwhile, Matt Lindstrom had a shaky outing the night before as he hit a batter, walked the next and allowed a single, but got a double-play in-between to limit the damage to one run.

San Diego Padres lefty Robbie Erlin started his rehab at Double-A San Diego, where he threw 42 pitches over 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Texas Rangers catcher Geovany Soto, recovering from a groin strain, went 1-2 while playing five innings behind the plate for Triple-A Round Rock.

Andy Dirks also played five innings as the rehabbing Tigers outfielder restarted his assignment and went 1-3. Dirks will stay with the West Michigan Whitecaps until Wednesday.

Blue Jays duo Brett Lawrie and Cole Gillespie helped High-A Dunedin to a 10-8 victory as they approach a return to the majors. Lawrie played second base and scored two runs, while Gillespie drove home two and played right field.

Giants center fielder Angel Pagan blasted two doubles on Thursday night for the AZL Giants, helping to get the only run of the game home as the right fielder made an error on the second. The team was off Friday but are scheduled to play again tonight.
