MLB Moves & Notes - August 4th - feat. Cowgill, Thatcher, Springer, Holland

By on 8/04/2014 03:23:00 PM

Looking for some rehab notes but don't want to trawl for updates? Think you might have missed a transaction or note buried in a team report? We've got you covered here:

Los Angeles Angels: placed LHP Joe Thatcher on the 15-day DL with a sprained ankle. The OCR's Jeff Fletcher reported that Thatcher caught his ankle in the turf when trying to field a bunt on Saturday.

Toronto Blue Jays: activated OF Cole Gillespie and outrighted him to Triple-A Buffalo. Gillespie had been out with a strained oblique after the Jays claimed him from the Mariners earlier in July.

Washington Nationals: placed OF Nate McLouth on the 15-day DL. The move was expected last night, with McLouth suffering from shoulder problems. Prospect Steven Souza Jr. has joined the team.

On the mend

The Angels could be activating Collin Cowgill as soon as Monday, reports Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times. Cowgill has been recovering from a broken thumb and nose. Meanwhile, Grant Green has started hitting off a tee, although Fletcher says he is 'not close' to a return.

Seattle Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders has been moving more slowly than expected, but Bob Dutton of the Tacoma News Tribune reports that he will undergo a 'rigorous' on-field workout on Tuesday. If Saunders makes it through the workout, the plan is for a rehab assignment later this week.

Rehab roundup

Astros rookie star George Springer will start his rehab assignment at Low-A Quad Cities today, per Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle. Although Springer is eligible to return Tuesday, Drellich suggests it is unlikely for travel reasons, as he would have to fly to Philadelphia to rejoin the team a day after flying to Iowa.

Milwaukee Brewers reliever Wei-Chung Wang made his first rehab appearance in the Arizona League, getting the start and pitching 1 1/3 scoreless innings with a hit and a strikeout.

Rangers starter Derek Holland will make his second rehab start, this time for Triple-A Round Rock, on Monday night.

Diamondbacks center fielder A.J. Pollock was back in the lineup on Saturday for the AZL D-Backs after a hit-by-pitch scare. Pollock hit a double in his two at-bats before being replaced in the fifth.

Former Rays number one pick Tim Beckham moved his rehab to High-A Charlotte and doubled in his first-at bat before the Stone Crabs' game was called, according to the Charlotte Sun's Josh Vitale. Beckham is rehabbing following ACL surgery in the offseason.

Pirates outfielder Starling Marte played for the Indianapolis Indians, going 1-4 with a double and two strikeouts in his first game since suffering a concussion.

Padres right-hander Joe Wieland pitched four innings for Double-A San Antonio, giving up one run and striking out two. Wieland is recovering from Tommy John surgery.
