Orioles Injury Update: J.J. Hardy MRI shows sprained thumb

By on 8/13/2014 07:00:00 AM

J.J. Hardy's MRI came back positive for the Baltimore Orioles.  Instead of having major damage, Roch Kubatko is reporting that Hardy's results showed just a sprained thumb. He is expected to rest and be back in the lineup by the weekend.

After losing Manny Machado earlier in the week, the Orioles cannot afford to lose a player like Hardy for any period of time.  While he provides strong defense at shortstop, losing his bat would be a major concern.

At the plate Hardy is an above average shortstop who has impressive power.  Six times in his career he has hit double digit home runs and he is a career .262 hitter.  This season after a slow start, Hardy has rebounded to raise his average to .284 with six home runs.   Ryan Flaherty is expected to fill in in Hardy's absence.  In Flaherty the Orioles start a player with significantly less offensive potential.
