Orioles Injury Update: J.J. Hardy scratched with thumb sprain

By on 8/10/2014 03:15:00 PM

The Baltimore Orioles scratched shortstop J.J. Hardy prior to their game Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals due to a left thumb sprain, reports Roch Kubatko of

It seems as though the injury occurred during batting practice, as Hardy was in the original lineup. Ryan Flaherty moved to shortstop to replace Hardy, with Jonathan Schoop inserted into the lineup at second base.

No other details are currently available about the severity of Hardy’s injury.

Hardy was bothered by injuries earlier in the season, but has been productive at the plate recently. He’s hit .283/.315/.388 in 108 games this season, totaling 2.6 WAR.

Baltimore has hit well over the past few games, thanks in part to Hardy’s hot streak. The Orioles quietly have the third-best record in the American League and lead the New York Yankees by six games in the AL East.
