Orioles Injury Update: Manny Machado to DL with ligament sprain

By on 8/13/2014 04:30:00 PM

After suffering what looked to be a gruesome knee injury, Roch Kubatko reported that Manny Machado had suffered a sprained knee ligament.
This afternoon's David Wilson delivered bad news that Machado requires a stint on the disabled list.
The loss of Machado will affect the Orioles on both sides of the ball.  In the field the 22-year-old third baseman is one of the best defenders in the game.  Last year he showed off his skills by making highlight reel plays each night and winning a Gold Glove.

At the plate he is one of the brightest young stars in the game.  Last season he led the league in doubles and after missing part of the first half this year due to injury he has gotten going again.  Through 82 games Machado is batting .278 with a .775 OPS and 12 home runs.  With each game important in the pennant race, Machado's skills will surely be missed.

Cord Phelps his been promoted in his absence.  In three major league seasons with Cleveland, Phelps has batted .159 in 123 at bats.
