Padres Injury Update: Joaquin Benoit expected to avoid DL

By on 8/22/2014 06:30:00 AM

The San Diego Padres entered Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a record of 59-66, third in the National League West. The Padres have been hindered by injuries, as eight players and five pitchers are currently on the disabled list. Another pitcher who has been hampered of late is reliever Joaquin Benoit, who has been battling a nagging shoulder issue.

I reported on August 18 the Benoit missed Sunday's game with a cranky shoulder, but was expected to be ready for Tuesday's game. Benoit apparently has taken long to recover than expected.

Dennis Lin, who covers the Padres for, tweeted the following update on Benoit.
Better news came on Thursday, with Lin reporting that Benoit was feeling better after throwing a bullpen session and is likely to pitch on Friday or Saturday, so no DL move is imminent.

Benoit, in his 13th Major League season, is 4-2 with seven saves and an ERA of 1.64.  The veteran has pitched for the Rangers, Rays, Tigers and Padres and has a career record of 48-37 with 44 saves and an ERA of 3.97.
