By on 8/18/2014 06:00:00 AM

The San Diego Padres fell to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday by the score of 7-6. The loss dropped the Padres to 58-65, third in the National League West. At seven games out of a wild card spot, the Padres need to make a run soon to get back into the wild card race. The bad news is they'll be without Yonder Alonso, who is out for the season. In a minor injury note, Joaquin Benoit missed Sunday's game, but is expected to be ready for Tuesday's game.

Our own Nathaniel Reeves reported on August 14 that Alonso on the 15-day disabled list with an undisclosed injury to his right forearm and wrist.

Jeff Sanders, who covers the Padres for U-T San Diego, tweeted the following on Alonso's status.
Alonso, in his fifth Major League season, is batting .240 with seven home runs and 27 RBI, in 84 games. The veteran has played for the Reds and Padres and has a career batting average of .271 with 27 home runs and 152 RBI.

Sanders also tweeted the following on Benoit.

Benoit, in his 13th Major League season, is 4-2 with seven saves and an ERA of 1.64.  The veteran has pitched for the Rangers, Rays, Tigers and Padres and has a career record of 48-37 with 44 saves and an ERA of 3.97.
