Panthers Injury Update: 'No doubt' Cam Newton plays Week 1

By on 8/28/2014 10:30:00 AM

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been working his way back to full strength after offseason ankle surgery, but there was no concern about his status for the start of the season. That changed dramatically last Friday night, as an awkward hit from New England Patriots linebacker Jamie Collins left Newton with a hairline fracture in his ribs.

Official word on Newton's status for Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is not likely to come until next week, but coach Ron Rivera has been optimistic that his quarterback will be ready to go. Newton backed up that faith when talking to reporters on Wednesday, saying there is "no doubt" he will play Week 1.

Newton was able to return to last Friday night's game after being injured, so that has to be taken as a positive sign that he can play with the injury. It's unclear when he'll return to practice, and it seems possible he won't practice at all between now and September 7. If Newton is unable to play, backup Derek Anderson would start his first game since he was with the Arizona Cardinals in 2010.
