Patriots Injury Update: Dominique Easley hopeful for week one

By on 8/28/2014 09:50:00 AM

The New England Patriots have been patiently waiting for Dominique Easley to return to game action. Easley has been sidelined by a torn acl, his second of his career, since September of last year. He was the Patriots first round draft pick in this year's draft, so the fan base is eager to see him, too.

According to Jeff Howe of the Boston Hearld, Easley will not suit up for tonight's final preseason game against the New York Giants. There is hope and optimism that he will be ready for week one, though.

The Patriots cut defensive lineman Tommy Kelly, which may have been a sign of Dominique Easley's overall health improving. But it also could have been a sign of Chris Jones and Sealver Siliga's health improving. Either way, it's a positive sign for the three young defensive tackles.

There is a position up for grabs next to Vince Wilfork on the defensive line. If Dominique Easley comes back and looks great, then there is no doubt he'll get the job. He'd have to beat out some solid defensive linemen though. Siliga, Jones and Joe Vellano aren't pushovers. They were all serviceable, at the least, last year, so Dominique Easley has his work cut out for him.

If he doesn't receive a starting job this year, then it wouldn't be a surprise, too. Patriots fans will have to have realistic expectations for a young player coming off acl surgery. It might take time for him to get back into form.

And if they wait patiently enough, they might get a pleasant surprise come playoff time from Easley, just like they did last year with Jamie Collins when he had a sack and an interception vs. the Colts.
