Pirates Injury Update: Andrew McCutchen expected to hit DL

By on 8/04/2014 08:00:00 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates expect to place center fielder Andrew McCutchen on the 15-day disabled list after he left Sunday's game in the eighth inning following an awkward swing. McCutchen hit a game-tying sacrifice fly but came out holding his left side. The Pirates expect him to miss three to four weeks says Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

In his Monday report, Cook says that McCutchen may have a "serious oblique muscle injury, according to a source." McCucthen took a fastball in the spine Saturday, so it is unclear at this time if Sunday's injury stemmed from that pitch on Saturday or from the swing on Sunday. Our own Darius Austin reported on the news that initial X-rays came out negative after getting hit by Saturday's pitch.

On Sunday's swing (video), McCutchen reached across the plate and pulled the ball to left field. He stopped running before he reached first base and walked off the field holding his left side. The :37 mark of the video clip shows him grabbing his side just a few steps out of the batter's box.

The Pirates are off Monday, so the Pirates have a little time to make a final decision before Tuesday night's home game with the Miami Marlins. Starling Marte will likely play center field until McCutchen returns.

McCutchen is hitting .311 with 17 HR, 67 RBI, and 17 SB in 109 games. Losing the 2013 N.L. MVP for an extended time will make it very difficult for the Pirates to catch the Milwaukee Brewers, whom the Pirates trail by 1.5 games in the N.L. Central as play begins on August 4.
